Earlier, we reported about Eva Longorio starring in an adaptation of Isabel Allende's novel The House of the Spirits. In the latest development, production on the show has commenced in Chile, the author's homeland. Allende is also producing the eight-part show alongside Longoria. The main producer of the show, FilmNation Entertainment roped in Francisca Alegria and Fernanda Urrejola to pen the script and serve as showrunners alongside Chilean filmmaker Andres Wood.
The House of the Spirits is a family saga set in a remote South American country that follows the lives of three generations of women in the Trueba Family. With hints of magical realism, the drama series will take on an epic journey of fortune, intrigue, love, and fate through the twentieth century. It is regarded as one of the best novels of the twentieth century, with more than 70 million copies sold. This is not the first adaptation of the novel. Bille August directed a 1993 film of the same name that starred Meryl Streep, Jeremy Irons, Wynona Rider, and Antonio Banderas.
Javiera Balmaceda of Amazon Studios said that the show looks to be closer to the Latin American origins of the novel. "What’s been so exciting about this opportunity is being able to showcase the talent that the region has to offer," Javiera told Variety, while adding, "And not just in acting, but behind the camera with Fernanda and Francisca as well as production designer Rodrigo Bazaes, who won a Platino Award for his work on ‘El Conde.’”
"We really want to make sure that we’re capturing both the people from the region and the essence of the story,” Javiera shared.
