Toho announces new Godzilla film, set for a theatrical release in 2023

Toho, the Japanese studio that introduced Godzilla to the world, has announced that they are working on a new Godzilla film. They also confirmed that the new addition to the franchise will hit screens on 3 November 2023, which happens to be “Godzilla Day.” The first Godzilla film, titled Gojira in Japanese, was released on 3 November 1954.

The film will be directed by Takashi Yamazaki, who is best known for Always: Sunset on Third Street, and Lupin III: The First. Toho recently released Shin Godzilla, directed by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi. Hideaki Anno is best known as the creator of the critically acclaimed mecha anime series Evangelion. The film was released in July 2016 and went on to become a box-office success.

The upcoming Godzilla film will be a live-action feature. Toho’s line-up of Godzilla films is separate from the Warner Bros films, which hold a separate license to the monster. It was also recently announced that Warner Bros is making a sequel to its monster face-off film Godzilla vs Kong. The Warner Bros film is currently scheduled to release on 15 March 2024.
