Tigmanshu Dhulia, who is currently gearing up for the release of his ZEE5 Original film Ghamasan, recently gave a talk at a public event. The filmmaker spoke about the impact of corporatisation in cinema, and how films have begun to have no story. He also criticised Dhurandhar, the recent blockbuster, for having ‘no story’.
Tigmanshu Dhulia added, “We have forgotten how to tell stories. Every film is a fictional biopic. Be it Pushpa, KGF or Dhurandhar. I liked the first part of Dhurandhar; its well presented. But If I ask you the story of Dhurandhar, you won’t be able to tell. Stories in films don’t exist anymore.”
Tigmanshu Dhulia also blamed the corporatisation of film industry for the phenomenon. He added, “When this corporate culture arrived in cinema, those people only understood numbers. They have no culture or education of cinema. Which is why only a certain kind of movies began to get made since then. They have turned movie theatres into living rooms, so I have stopped going to cinemas. Till 2017, we were making decent films. Something happened suddenly after that, lord knows what.”
Tigmanshu was speaking at an event organised by The Wire, speaking on the subject, ‘The State of Media and Film Industry.’
Tigmanshu Dhulia, who began his directorial career in 2003 with the cult classic Haasil, is known for films like Paan Singh Tomar (2012), Sahib Bibi aur Gangster (2011), and Bullett Raja (2013). As an actor, he came to limelight with his performance in the 2012 film Gangs of Wasseypur.
Meanwhile, Ghamasaan, starring Arshad Warsi and Pratik Gandhi, is set to premiere on ZEE5 on September 11.
