Radhika Apte is gearing up for the October 30 release of Akka, a Netflix series where she stars alongside Keerthy Suresh. In a recent promotional interview for the series, Radhika spoke about her sparse filmography in South Indian cinema. Speaking to News18, the actor said that colourism plays a part in the lack of opportunities for actors in cinema of the South. "I am not fair," the actor said, referring to the prejudice against artists with darker skin tones. Radhika Apte added that she has wondered why even such artists even from the South do not have enough opportunities to star in films from their own region, let alone those from the North.
Radhika also shared that she does not want to encourage this tendency of filmmakers. "South Indian actors are really talented and beautiful, as well as being adept at their languages," Radhika noted before opining that it is better to cast them than having supposedly 'better-looking' artists from the North and having their portions dubbed locally.
"I can understand it if such casting is done for a specific reason, but language is also a major hurdle for me," Radhika Apte said, while adding that she could not do justice to those roles without proficiency in the specific vernacular.
Radhika only has a handful of South Indian titles in her filmography, including Kabali with Rajinikanth, Chithiram Pesuthadi 2, and the two Rakta Charitra films with director Ram Gopal Varma. In Malayalam, on the other hand, her only credit is 2015's Haram, co-starring Fahadh Faasil.
Radhika was last seen in a segment of this year's Lust Stories 3 that is titled Erotica, directed by Vishal Bhardwaj. In Akka, Radhika and Keerthy Suresh star alongside Tanvi Azmi, Jayashree, Nivedita Bhargava, Anshumaan Pushkar, Poornima Indrajith, Vishak Nair, Mahesh Manjrekar, and Monika Panwar.
