The team behind director Sudhir Mishra's upcoming Mahatma Gandhi biopic, titled Gandhi and My Mother, released new pictures from the film on Gandhi Jayanti. The pictures offer a new look at Manoj Bajpayee's character as Mahatma Gandhi and Waheeda Rahman as his mother, Putlibai.
One of the images offers a more closer-than-before look at Manoj Bajpayee, who appears even harder to recognise behind all the makeup for his character. The image makes it evident that the actor has been through a remarkable physical transformation to portray the role in the film with conviction. The images provide a glimpse of the period-specific setting of the film as well.
Gandhi and My Mother will explore a 21-day-long passage from from India's independence period. According to an ANI report, it is set to offer a deeply personal exploration of the historical figure.
The Mahatma Gandhi biopic is produced by Narendra Hirawat of NH Studioz and Anubhav Sinha of Benaras Mediaworks. It also stars Saurabh Shukla and Divya Dutta in important roles.
With the film, Manoj Bajpayee is set to become only one of the handful of Indian actors to play the role of the man, often called the 'Father of the Nation'. Previously, actors such as Naseeruddin Shah, Annu Kapoor, Surendra Rajan, and Rajit Kapur, among others, have played the iconic role. Notably, Pratik Gandhi is also playing the character in filmmaker Hansal Mehta's upcoming series, based on the historical figure. The most iconic portrayal of the character is by Ben Kingsley for a 1982 film, which won the actor and the film an Oscar award each.
Gandhi and My Mother brings Waheeda Rahman back to film acting after 2021's Skater Girl. The film brings Manoj back together with Saurabh Shukla following collaborations on 1998's Satya and 2011's Aarakshan. It also reunites Manoj and Divya Dutta after this year's critically acclaimed film Last Man in Tower.
