Legendary playback singer Alka Yagnik recently made a public appearance in Delhi where she was present to receive the much-coveted Padma Bhushan Award. However, fans and music lovers expressed their concern after seeing Alka in a wheelchair and what seemed like debilitating health. Shortly after, Alka Yagnik issued a statement thanking fans for their concern and assuring them of her well being. Later, on Wednesday, noted actor and playback singer Ila Arun expressed her support towards Alka Yagnik.
Taking to her Instagram page, Ila Arun shared a picture of hers with Alka, penning a long note that read, “To those doubting Alka Yagnik ji, I’ve been seeing comments that she “cannot sing anymore” after being honored with the Padma Bhushan. This is disheartening. For any artist singer, painter, actor being told you can’t do what you love is deeply painful. Art lives in the soul, not just the voice, the hand, or the stage. Alka ji has given India decades of magic.”
Further expressing her pride and faith in Alka Yagnik’s return, Ila added, “Let’s not forget what she’s given us. Miracles happen. Strength returns. And voices find their way back. I’ve had the joy of singing many songs with her, and I’m looking forward to singing with her again. I love you, dear Alka your strength, your positivity. I see you coming back in full swing.”
Notably, Alka Yagnik and Ila Arun were the co playback singers in the iconic 1993 track ‘Choli Ke Peeche’ from Subhash Ghai’s film Khalnayak. While the song courted plenty of controversy for its suggestive lyrics, it became an instant chartbuster and continues to be remembered as one of Madhuri Dixit’s most iconic dance numbers.
In 2024, Alka Yagnik was diagnosed with a rare condition called sensorineural hearing loss. The disorder severely impacted her hearing, in effect heavily damaging her singing prospects. One of her last popular songs was ‘Naram Kaalja’ which she sang for Amar Singh Chamkila (2024).
