Manoj Bajpayee, who is known for his realistic performances, will next be seen a character based on a real-life figure in the political thriller Governor. Made under the banner of Vipul Amrutlal Shah's Sunshine Pictures, the film is directed by Chinmay Mandlekar and revolves around a newly-appointed RBI Governor who is entrusted with the herculean task of saving the nation from an economic meltdown.
According to a press release, Manoj Bajpayee’s character is inspired by the life of former RBI Governor S Venkitaramanan. Appointed as the 18th Governor between December 1990 and December 1992, Venkitaramanan led the Reserve Bank of India, playing a pivotal role in navigating one of the most challenging periods in the country's economic history. Manoj Bajpayee, who will be seen playing the protagonist inspired by Venkitaramanan, described Venkitaramanan as a ‘visionary who took enormous risks at a time when the country's future was uncertain.’
According to the Family Man actor, the former RBI Governor was not considered the obvious choice for the role while being brought in during a national emergency. However, his unconventional thinking and willingness to take difficult decisions helped prevent India from going bankrupt. The actor added that Governor aims to highlight the story of a man whose contribution to India's economic survival remains largely unknown to the public.
Under his leadership, gold was shipped overseas and pledged to international banks to raise approximately USD 405 million. The move helped India avoid a sovereign default and bought crucial time for policymakers to implement sweeping economic reforms. Today, the decision is viewed as one of the most important turning points in modern Indian economic history. Venkitaramanan’s legacy, therefore, is deeply intertwined with India's response to the economic crisis of 1991.
With a script by Suvendu Bhattacharyjee, Saurabh Bharat, Ravi Asrani, and Vipul Amrutlal Shah, the film also features Madhoo and Adah Sharma in the lead cast. With lyrics by Javed Akhtar, with music composed by Amit Trivedi, Governor is set for its theatrical release on June 12.
