Sonam Wangchuk, the climate activist who has been on an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, Delhi since many days, has witnessed a major health dip recently. Among others, a few Bollywood celebrities have now spoken up in his support, request the government to intervene.
Taking to her Instagram page, yesteryear screen legend Zeenat Aman penned, “My thoughts today are in the country’s capital city where Sonam Wangchuk is entering the 17th day of his indefinite hunger strike. I read in a news article that Mr. Wangchuk has started losing muscle mass and is in immense pain. And that, when asked to end his fast, he replied ‘Don’t ask me to end my fast. Ask the government why they won’t even have a dialogue.’”
Further listing Wangchuk’s accomplishments, Zeenat added, “With respect to Mr. Wangchuk’s wishes, I implore the Indian government to open dialogue on this matter that concerns the future of all India. We must not become a society that sits back and watches one of its greatest minds be sacrificed. India has a long history of peaceful protest; those who wield power are obliged to meet such protest with peaceful dialogue.”
Meanwhile, on Tuesday morning, 3 Idiots actor Omi Vaidya too shared a video statement about Sonam Wangchuk’s deteriorating health, where he said, “I don't know if the media is reporting this, but this is a pretty important thing. We're just regular people... and sometimes we're too busy to deal with this stuff. But if you have a second to just stop, put down your work from the new project... or the household duties... and just take a look at what's going on right now. Please retweet, please post on your Instagrams, and if you really care you can even reach out to your local... or national government officials... because you know, these things matter. I think they matter and I hope that you think they matter too."
Omi added in his video statement, "I don't want Phunsukh Wangdu to die and I don't think you want him to either." It is to be noted that the character of Fungsuk Wangdu in 3 Idiots, played by Aamir Khan, was actually based on Wangchuk.
Among others, Abhay Deol too shared a picture of Sonam Wangchuk, with a ‘broken heart’ emoji on his Instagram page.
