There have been multiple points of view that support and reject the role of AI in cinema. While many filmmakers have dismissed the idea of using AI and called it a lazy concept, some have also backed it. The latest to support the use of AI for filmmaking is Ram Gopal Varma.
In a recent conversation with Bollywood Hungama, the Satya and Company director said that artificial intelligence can create better storytelling as compared to their human counterparts. The detractors of AI in cinema claim that the technology might be able to produce screenplays but these will not have the human touch. However, according to Ram Gopal Varma, AI can overcome this limitation.
Screenwriters tend to tell stories based on their memories and experiences, allowing them to make the emotions in these to be more palpable. However, the filmmaker opined that because AI is a reservoir of a vast amount of data and possesses plenty of knowledge, the aforementioned limitation does not even matter with regard to storytelling.
"Because it has much more knowledge, it can analyse better. Then, the question of whether it feels or not, is unimportant. Because feeling is nothing but a limitation of an organic species," the filmmaker argued.
He also said that screenwriters can feed the information they want in their stories as prompts to AI tools and keep doing this until they get a satisfactory output, thus overcoming the limitation of AI. He added that they can ask AI if their screenplays have any flaws in them to the AI tools in question and improve the scripts with the tools. According to him, the film industries around the world do not make use of AI for filmmaking because they are "in a state of denial".
The filmmaker's upcoming projects include Police Station Mein Bhoot, starring Manoj Bajpayee.
