Shahid Kapoor is an actor admired for his craft, but he also faces some criticism on social networking websites for his performances in films, among other things. The actor recently talked about how he deals with all the negativity around him on social media. In a recent interview with The Hindustan Times, Shahid addressed it, thus offering a broader perspective on the culture of online critics.

Shahid questioned how some can claim that such criticism does not have a negative effect on them, and he also said those whom it affects considerably "are putting themselves in a dangerous place".

While Shahid questioned the veracity of netizens who spread hatred on social media, he also highlighted the importance of not living "in a bubble" and of having a better idea of what the broader audience in general feels.

Calling it "a difficult journey" to be on social media, Shahid Kapoor said that it poses the dual challenge of having to open oneself up and "be very mindful" of information they allow to get to them. However, one comment that he made during the interview is drawing much criticism online. He said, "People may term me old-fashioned for saying this, but one should only open their mouth if they have the status to do so. I have learnt this in childhood. I have seen many great artists in childhood, such as my father (Pankaj Kapoor) and mother (Neelima Azeem). People used not to open their mouths against them."

In contrast, Shahid feels that people have the habit of saying too much today and they should earn their social standing to be able to do so. The actor attributed this to those people's insecurities, fears, and/or lack of happiness. "You have to keep yourself good, happy and ready to perform," the actor said, referring to how to deal with the negativity as an artist.

While the actor tried to contextualise his comments and bring some nuance to it, many are taking an objection to it, saying that he is questioning freedom of speech and people's liberty to do what they want. What has not gone down well with the netizens is the use of his word 'aukat' (status/position).
