Emraan Hashmi-headliner romantic-actioner Awarapan 2 continues to impress at the box office. The film, which recorded an opening of Rs 22 crore, earned Rs 33.75 crore on Saturday. It retained the momentum on Sunday with a collection of Rs 26 crore. This has taken its net collection in India to Rs 81.75 crore and gross collection to Rs 98.10 crore. Worldwide, the film has already crossed the Rs 100-crore mark and collected Rs 110.10 crore.
On Sunday, Awarapan 2 recorded an overall occupancy of 52.83 per cent across 9,403 shows. Morning shows recorded 25.69 per cent occupancy, followed by 60.38 per cent in the afternoon, 68.62 per cent in the evening and 56.62 per cent at night. In Delhi-NCR, the film registered 55.8% occupancy across 947 shows, while Mumbai recorded 42.8 per cent occupancy across 751 shows.
Awarapan 2 has had a more favourable fate than its predecessor. The 2007 original, directed by Mohit Suri, although became a cult favourite over the years but when it released it could only amass a lifetime collection of Rs 7.75 crore. The sequel surpassed the first part’s lifetime earnings in just a few hours. The Nitin Kakkar directorial has also maintained a significant lead over Sunny Deol’s Batwara 1947, which also released on the same day (August 14) and has collected Rs 37.11 crore worldwide so far.
When it comes to critics’ response, Awarapan 2 received a mixed bag. The film was appreciated for playing on the nostalgia but the story itself was less engaging for many. CE’s review of the film read: “Awarapan 2 stands on its own, eventhough its stance is wobbly. For the millennials there is a lot to cheer for. Hashmi is back in his brood, sporting rexine jackets over black vests. The Bangkok nightlife is gritty, grimy and neon-nostalgic, but what is missing is the depth of Shivam’s angst.”
The film also features Shabana Azmi, Suvinder Vicky, Disha Patani, Puran Gabbi, and Vijayant Kohli, amongst others.
