Since the release of the Ramayana teaser earlier today, netizens have been quite vocal about Ranbir Kapoor's role as Lord Ram in the film. There have been plenty of reservations about the actor's suitability for the part for a while now, but the teaser took it up by a notch. While the old notion about not judging a book by its cover should hold true, internet users wonder whether the actor is the right choice for the mythological character.
Meanwhile, it is worth taking our attention back to 2022, when Ranbir made a candid admission about his role in director Prakash Jha's 2010 film Raajneeti. Speaking to Brut back then, the actor said that he lacked a deep understanding of the film's material, based on the Mahabharata — a feeling that was reinforced as he dubbed for his portions. He credited Prakash Jha's 'actor-proof' screenplay for the film as the reason why he was 'saved' from criticism and his character of Samar Pratap proved 'impactful'.
"It didn't matter if I put in the effort or not. I always regret that film, as a character, as an actor. I kind of missed out because I could have gone deeper, I could have done better," the actor said about Raajneeti.
It is worth noting that, despite Ranbir Kapoor own admission, critics were rather kind towards his performance in the political drama. In fact, many of them regard it as one of the actor's most underrated performances in feature films. He also earned multiple nominations for his performance in the 2010 film, winning some of these.
It remains to be seen how the audience would receive Ramayana and Ranbir's performance in it when the film eventually releases in theatres. Much of the film's destiny hinges on the actor's performance because it is, after all, billed as the hero's story.
