The trailer of Yami Gautam Dhar and Emraan Hashmi’s upcoming courtroom-drama, Haq was unveiled by the makers on Monday. Written by Reshu Nath, the film has been directed by Suparn S Varma and also stars Vartika Singh, Danish Husain, Sheeba Chadha and Aseem Hattangady in pivotal roles.
The film is inspired by the Supreme Court’s 1985 judgement in the case of Mohd. Ahmed Khan vs. Shah Bano Begum, where the court ruled that a divorced Muslim woman is entitled to maintenance under the law. Ahmed Khan, a prominent lawyer, had divorced his wife, Shah Bano after 14 years of marriage and abandoned her along with their children, which made her to file a petition in court for giving her maintenance under section 125 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
The trailer introduces Yami as Shazia Bano who takes her husband, Abbas, a prominent lawyer, to court after he abandons her and their children and marries another woman. The relationship between the two is briefly shown and how Abbas verbally pronounces divorce to Shazia, denying to give her any maintenance after paying her some amount of money. The trailer features a lot of intense arguments in the courtroom as Shazia defends her case. Abbas argues in favour of the Islamic personal law while distancing from the secular law. The trailer ends with Shazia giving an emotional speech in the court where she calls herself an Indian Muslim woman and bats to be treated equally under law along with other citizens.
As per the makers, the film is a fictionalized and dramatized version of events stated in the book titled Bano: Bharat ki Beti written by Jigna Vora. It features music by Vishal Mishra with the words of Kaushal Kishore.
Presented by Junglee Pictures, produced by Vineet Jain, Vishal Gurnani, Juhi Parekh Mehta and Harman Baweja, Haq is set to be released in theatres on November 7.
