Ayushmann Khurrana plays the role of a vampire in Munjya director Aditya Sarpotdar's upcoming film Thamma. The actor recently spoke to ANI about the film's significance in his career. "Thamma is the biggest film in my career so far in terms of scale, budget, and release (timing). This is the first time my film is releasing on Diwali," said the Andhadhun star. Ayushmann described Maddock Horror Comedy Universe, of which the film is a part, as "one of the most successful" film franchises in India.
He also said that Thamma is the strongest Vetal, an entity from the Hindu folklore, and that the film will explore its genesis. According to him, it is such a "fantastical film that is significantly different" from the rest of the titles in his filmography. "I have done many realistic films so far and have not ventured into this space ever before," he shared. He found the production experience new, with action sequences involving green screens, a fight with a bear, and jumps between buildings.
Also starring Paresh Rawal in an important role, the film has been shot in locations such as Ooty, Delhi, and Mumbai. "This is a very exciting project for me," said Ayushmann. Looking back at his journey as an actor, Ayushmann reminisced about his days as an RJ. "I used to ask questions to actors, but now I am answering them. It feels surreal."
Aditya has directed the film from a screenplay by Niren Bhatt, Suresh Mathew and Arun Fulara. Produced by Dinesh Vijan, Amar Kaushik and co-produced by Sharada Karki Jalota, Pooja Prem Patheja, the film is slated for an October 21 release.
