Kangana Ranaut took to social media on Sunday to dismiss the Academy Awards as ‘silly’. The actor-turned MP was responding to a fan’s tweet asking for her film Emergency to be sent as India’s official entry to Oscars.
The fan had written on X, “Emergency should go for the Oscars from India. Kangana, what a film.” Taking a screenshot of the tweet and sharing it on her Instagram stories, Kangana wrote, “But America wouldn't like to acknowledge its real face, how they bully suppress and arm twist developing nations. It's been exposed in Emergency. They can keep their silly Oscar. We have National Awards.”
In Emergency, Kangana essays the role of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, exploring her controversial tenure when she issued an Emergency during 1975-1977. The film, which released in theatres after much delay on January 17 earlier this year, also stars Shreyas Talpade, Anupam Kher, Mlind Soman and Mahima Chaudhry in pivotal roles.
The film received mixed reviews upon release and didn’t do well at the box-office.
