The trailer of R Madhavan and Fatima Sana Shaikh’s upcoming romance-drama Aap Jaisa Koi was unveiled by the makers on Wednesday. It is helmed by Meenakshi Sundareshwar (2021) director Vivek Soni and also stars Ayesha Raza, Manish Chaudhari and Namit Das in pivotal roles.

The trailer introduces Madhavan as Shrirenu Tripathi, a 42-year-old Sanskrit professor who wants to get married. He is fixed up with Fatima’s character, Madhu Bose. The two fall in love in the old-school way, eating popcorn in cinema theatres and dancing freely in the rains. However, trouble strikes when Srirenu’s conservative family objects to Madhu’s modern lifestyle. In a scene, she explains to him that she won’t live as per his demands. "Pyaara barabari wala hona chahiye (Love should be equal)", she says. The conflict increases further as the fate of their relationship remains undecided undecided.

Speaking about the film, Madhavan shared in a press release ”Aap Jaisa Koi is unlike any love story I’ve done before — it’s quiet, awkward, and deeply human. Shrirenu is one of the most complex characters I’ve played — someone who longs for companionship and closeness, but doesn’t quite know how to ask for it, yet he is rich with emotion underneath. This film isn’t loud or dramatic — it’s patient, gentle, and deeply affecting. I was drawn to how it speaks to all the people who’ve felt overlooked in life or love.“

Fatima added, “Through this film, I got to dive into different shades of love, and oddly enough, it felt quite therapeutic. I also really enjoyed working with Vivek.. he has a very unique voice as a filmmaker, and it was a pleasure to be a part of his beautiful world. I’m just grateful I had the opportunity to collaborate with Netflix and Dharmatic Entertainment, along with Vivek, and Maddy on a story that’s so honest and special.”

Produced by Karan Johar, Adar Poonawalla, Apoorva Mehta and Somen Mishra, the film is set to be released on Netflix on July 11.
