After opting for a no-OTT model, Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par is still running in theatres, however, the initial momentum at the box office seems to have fizzled out. The RS Prasanna directorial had its lowest collections on Day 27 (fourth Wednesday) of its release and managed to rake in only Rs 50 lakh, as per industry tracker Sacnilk.
Sitaare… released on June 20 and was the only theatrical that week. A clear box office window favoured the film and it made Rs 88.9 crore in its first week. Subsequently, there was a predictable downward slope in collections with Rs 46.5 crore and Rs 18.95 crore in week 2 and week 3, respectively. The low box office of the film might also be because the film facing competition with big budget flicks like Superman and F1. The advance bookings for Mohit Suri’s Saiyaara are also picking up and Anurag Basu’s Metro…In Dino is also reaching for the Rs 50 crore mark.
Billed as a spiritual sequel to the critically acclaimed movie Taare Zameen Par, Sitaare… released in theatres on June 20. It also stars Genelia D’Souza, and ten debutant actors, namely Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishna Varma, Samvit Desai, Vedant Sharma, Ayush Bhansali, Ashish Pendse, Rishi Shahani, Rishabh Jain, Naman Mishra, and Simran Mangeshkar.
The film had mixed reception from the critics. Our review of the film read: “Sitaare Zameen Par has its heart in the right place but it often wears it on its sleeve. It becomes didactic, spelling out lessons to the viewer rather than letting them make a journey of their own. It is too eager to reverberate with the masses, so desperate for a group hug that it often overlooks the intimacy of just holding hands.”
Aamir's Taare Zameen Par released in 2007, starring Darsheel Safary alongside the actor. In the film, Aamir portrayed the role of a schoolteacher who helps Darsheel’s character uncover his potential after discovering he has dyslexia.
