Vicky Kaushal’s historical-drama Chhaava has opened at Rs 31 crore at the box-office on Day 1, as per Sacnilk.com. Directed by Laxman Utekar, the film also stars Rashmika Mandanna, Akshaye Khanna, Ashutosh Rana, Vineet Kumar Singh, Divya Dutta, Diana Penty and Santosh Juvekar in pivotal roles. Vicky plays the role of Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj in it while Akshaye essays the role of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.
The film had an overall occupancy of 42 per cent on Friday with morning shows amounting to 30 per cent, afternoon shows 34 per cent, evening shows 40.51 per cent and evening shows making up to 62 per cent. It saw maximum occupancy in Mumbai and Pune, due to the historical significance of Sambhaji in the regions.
The film has become the biggest opener of 2025, surpassing Akshay Kumar's Sky Force, which made Rs 12.25 crore on Day 1.
Chhaava has been produced by Dinesh Vijan and features music by A.R. Rahman.
Our CE’s review of the film reads, “After a meandering start and a middling middle, Chhaava leaves some impact by the climax. Vicky’s Sambhaji batters a sea of Mughal soldiers with a log, and although it seems like a scene from a zombie apocalypse film, it boasts of scale and filmmaking. His subsequent torture by Aurangzeb, although true as per popular history, is grotesque and stretched. Days and nights pass as a bloodied Sambhaji stands in chains like a biblical Jesus. His nails are ripped off, and his eyes are gouged out. But you don’t feel his pain. There is no sympathy nor a stirring sense of patriotism. There is just exhaustion.
