Ram Gopal Varma has doubled down on his praise for director Aditya Dhar's Dhurandhar, starring Ranveer Singh and Akshaye Khanna, among others. According to the filmmaker, the film is working at the box office not necessarily because of its element of patriotism. The Satya and Company director argued that attributing the film's success just to this element is like saying, "the empathy for Ramgarh villagers made Sholay work". He went on to opine that the main reason for its success is director Aditya making an unprecedented cinematic experience. "The one and only reason why it's working is because Aditya Dhar made a never-before-experienced fantastic, exciting and intriguing thriller entertainer," Ram Gopal Varma shared on X.
Dhurandhar follows an Indian spy (Ranveer) who goes to Pakistan to infiltrate the world of gangsters and terrorists in the country to stop its acts of terrorism against India. The film, which also stars R Madhavan, Sara Arjun, Sanjay Dutt, and Arjun Rampal, takes a critical look at the government's failure to ensure national safety with passages inspired by real events, such as the 2008 Mumbai attacks. At the same time, the film indirectly uses the BJP government's 'Ghar Me Ghus Ke Marenge' sentiment against terrorism as part of its masala storytelling.
So far, the Ranveer Singh starrer has reportedly grossed over 900 crore from theatres worldwide.
