SonyLIV announces Jazz City, new series based on 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War

The political drama is created and directed by Soumik Sen, and stars Arifin Shuvoo, Santanu Ghatak and Sauraseni Maitra in the lead

On Tuesday, SonyLIV released the announcement teaser for one of their upcoming OTT shows titled Jazz City, also sharing the premiere date. Jazz City will begin streaming on February 6.

Created, written, and directed by Soumik Sen, Jazz City promises to be n intense political drama, primarily focusing on the Bangaldeshi Liberation War of 1971, and the conflicts it caused in the already-turbulent ties between Pakistan and India.

The announcement teaser begins with a gruesome visual of an East Pakistani officer coaxing a Bangaldeshi Muslim to choose Muslim as his primary identity. When the latter refuses to bow down, acknowleding his Bengali roots first, the officer shoots him.

Meanwhile, amidst all the political killings and oppression, a Jazz club emerges in Calcutta, that secretly operates as the hub for many rebellious activities carried out by the revolutionaries. “Music was the backdrop, while words sparked a revolution. A soul was awakened. A language screamed. A Nation was born. And it all began in the shadows of a jazz club in 1971,” the streamer captioned their announcement teaser.

Interestingly, the teaser also carries text supers of contemporary events like 26/11, Pulwama attack, and Pahalgam attack, hinting at the series possibly spanning across a time period of last 60 years, as it captures the political history of Indian subcontinent. Produced by Studio Next, the primary cast of the show includes Sauraseni Maitra (who recently appeared in Saali Mohabbat), Shataf Figar, Arifin Shuvoo, and Santanu Ghatak. In the supporting cast, the show has Amit Saha, Alexandra Taylor, Sreya Bhattacharyya, Sayandeep Sen, Tanika Basu, and Aniruddha Gupta.

Season 2 of Freedom at Midnight gets streaming date

Jazz City will be available for streaming in Bengali, Hindi, and English. 

Soumik Sen has previously directed Gulaab Gang, apart from being associated with shows like Badman, Jubilee, Cheat India, and Nakaab.
