After a middling theatrical run, Kajol headliner horror-thriller Maa now has an OTT release date. The Vishal Furia directorial will land on Netflix this Friday (August 22).

The streaming giant took to Instagram on Thursday to make the announcement. They shared a poster of the film with the caption, “Jab rakshak ek maa ho to har bhakshak ki haar hogi (When the protector is a mother, the predator will lose) Watch Maa, out 22 August, on Netflix.”

Maa features Kajol as Ambika, a woman leading a happy life with her husband, and daughter Shweta when a tragedy strikes. The mother-daughter pair then travel to Chandrapur in West Bengal to sell their ancestral bungalow. There they confront the eerie traditions and tightly held secrets of the village and are drawn into a chilling web of fear, superstition, and something even darker, according to the official plotline.

The film had a lukewarm box office run and could only make about Rs 36 crore out of its theatre ticket sales.

In an earlier interview Kajol, who has done many OTT films and shows including The Trial (2023- present) and Do Patti (2024), had said that nothing beats the charm of watching movies in theatres.

"Cinemas still have magic, somewhere down the line... You just don't have that same vibe or feel when you're watching a movie at home. It's something that only a cinema theatre can give you," she said.

Maa also features Indraneil Sengupta, Kherin Sharma and Ronit Roy. Presented by Jio Studios and Devgn Films, the film is produced by Jyoti Deshpande and co-produced by Kumar Mangat Pathak.

Our review of the film read: “Maa is what you get if you cross Bulbbul (2020) with a Maddock horror film. Its themes feel dated, explored so often in the Stree films. The build-up is effective, but only in parts. The lore of the film is derived from the indigenous tale of deity Kaali and her battle with the demon Raktbeej but its visual design seems borrowed. The villain looks like if the Night King from Game of Thrones decided to join the Children of the Forest. There are some impressive set-pieces though and two of them involve cars.”
