Karan Johar is not ready to bid farewell to his 2006 romance drama, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna—at least, not yet. The film, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, Abhishek Bachchan, Amitabh Bachchan, Preity Zinta, and Kirron Kher, hit theatres 19 years on this day. On the special occasion, its director Karan took to social media to articulate how special it is to him even today. "Some love stories transcend time and still hold all the power they once did... KANK for me will always be that," the filmmaker wrote. He went on to add that in his third directorial, he "was moved again by the absolute honour of having such terrific people on set with me to make a story that was bold... brave and full of only heart."

Karan also shared a making video and some behind-the-scene images from the film. Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna tells the story of two couples who realise that their partners do not reciprocate their love for them. Rani's Maya Talwar, who is married to Abhishek's Rishi Talwar, is in love with Shah Rukh's Dev Saran instead. The film is best known for Karan's sensitive direction, Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy's melodious music, Anil Mehta's beautiful picturisation of the songs, and the performances by the lead actors.

Karan has often stated that Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna is his best film. It marked his return to direction after his debut film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) and his sophomore directorial Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... (2001).
