Aamir Khan recently shared an update on his ambitious adaptation of the mythological epic of Mahabharata and said that he hopes to start work on it this year. He also revealed that as the scope of the epic is large, it will be divided into multiple films like the Lord of The Rings series and will be helmed by multiple directors.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Aamir called the film ‘one of his biggest ambitions’. “I am hoping to start work on this year. It will take a while because the writing process will take a few years.”

He also shared that he is not sure if he will act in the film. “We’ll see who we should cast based on who’s appropriate for which part,” he said. The actor also clarified that he may not direct the film as it’s a big project. “I don’t think you can tell the Mahabharata in one film, so it will be multiple films. I am looking at the large scale. It’s too early to say, but we may need multiple directors. If we have to plan it in a certain timeline… because if you do one after another, it will take very long. Like they did in Lord of the Rings. So something like that — in that case, you will need more than one director" he added.

In 2022, Aamir had opened up about his desire of adapting the epic and how he feels ‘scared’ to do it. “When you are making a film on Mahabharata, you are not just making a film. You are performing a yagya. It is not just a film, it is much more. And, that is why I am not ready for it yet. I am scared of bringing it out. Mahabharata will never let you down, but you may let down Mahabharata,” he said in an interview with Galatta Plus.

Meanwhile, as an actor, Aamir is currently gearing up for the release of Sitaare Zameen Par, a spiritual sequel to Taare Zameen Par, which is being helmed by RS Prasanna and also stars Genelia Deshmukh.
