Amit Golani opened up about his upcoming directorial Logout, starring Babil Khan and said that he wanted to highlight how online relationships are overshadowing real-life bonds. The film talks about the perils of social media and phone addiction.
Speaking about how the story developed, Amit said, “The story started as a subplot Biswapati (the writer) and I were exploring—about what happens when a phone goes missing. But the emotional core became clear when we referred to Misery (a book by Stephen King), which is about an obsessed fan and a celebrity. That theme felt very relevant even today, and we were confident the emotional connect would hold. The social media angle came in later, highlighting how online relationships are starting to overshadow real-life ones.”
Amit said that in today’s times, online presence impacts real life. “Even with Logout, we’re not saying social media or using a phone is bad. The question is—what cost are you willing to pay for it? And the first step in making that choice is recognizing that issues can arise if you go overboard.”
He added, “That’s what Logout tries to portray. Personally, I might not be comfortable sharing certain things, but I have friends who are genuine social media influencers and truly enjoy sharing their lives—and that’s completely fine. It’s just about being aware of when it might start affecting your real relationships.”
The director said that he has become more conscious about using technology owing to the scams taking place online. “But I’ve never really been someone who shares a lot on social media. I’m a big consumer—I’m definitely a phone addict—but I don’t post much. That said, it has made me more mindful about what I choose to share and what I don’t,” he shared.
Logout is produced by Sameer Saxena, Saurabh Khanna, Amit Golani and Biswapati Sarkar. It will be released on ZEE5 on April 18.
