Kiran Rao recently talked about the changing tastes of audiences after the Covid-19 pandemic and said that they want to watch authentic stories more than glamorous spectacles. She was speaking at the Mumbai Dialogues, an event organised by The New Indian Express in Mumbai last week.
The director talked about how the return to theatres was slower after the pandemic and makers assumed that people wanted to watch extravagant films. “I don’t think that’s ever the case when you are pulling people back. Audiences are flushed with so many choices at the moment and they would come to the theatres to watch authentic stories. As filmmakers, our attempts should be to do that rather than going for spectacles,” she said. “People want to be surprised; they want to be taken on a journey that is unexpected and it doesn’t matter then if it’s a story set in a village.”
Her film, Laapataa Ladies is selected as India’s official entry to the 97th Academy Awards by members of The Film Federation of India. It is produced by Aamir Khan and stars Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Nitanshi Goel and Ravi Kishan, among others.
The film released in theatres on March 1 and was praised for its depiction of serious issues through humour in the storytelling. It will be released next in Japan on October 4.
