Laapataa Ladies director Kiran Rao at a recent event spoke about how she grew up on films of Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak, and Hrishikesh Mukherjee but now her go to guilty pleasure was K-Dramas.
Talking at the Mumbai Dialogues event organised by The New Indian Express, Kiran said, “I grew up watching all the greats Ray, Ghatak, Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Then in film school I saw the Italian Neorealism movies, the French New Wave, Iranian cinema, all of that.”
“But now I enjoy watching Korean dramas. It’s kind of like a guilty pleasure. There's a huge variety in that space. It’s fascinating how they have managed to engage the entire world without losing out on their own cultural relevance,” she added.
Kiran’s recent release is the well acclaimed Laapataa Ladies. It features Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, and Chhaya Kadam. Presented by Jio Studios, the film is produced by Aamir Khan and Jyoti Deshpande. It had its theatrical release in March and is now streaming on Netflix.
