Kareena Kapoor Khan's film Jaane Jaan, with director Sujoy Ghosh, is known for the way it integrates its locations virtually as characters into its screenplay. The misty Kalimpong lends an appropriately moody tone to the 2023 Netflix thriller, which also stars Jaideep Ahlawat and Vijay Varma in key roles. Ghosh shot the film in and around Darjeeling, including Kalimpong. However, before the Darjeeling schedule, Ghosh had doubters telling him to think twice about casting Kareena in the film, because she "would never agree to shoot there."

In his recent Mashable India interview, Ghosh underscored the difference between how people perceive Kareena and how committed the actor is to her craft. The filmmaker said, “When you see someone publicly, it’s easy to form an opinion about them. Many told me Kareena would never shoot in Darjeeling, but that wasn’t the case. She committed fully to the project. Her dedication to work is commendable”,

The Kahaani filmmaker substantiated the reason for casting Kareena in his film. He said, “When writing a character, I always create a face in my mind. When I was writing the role of a mother who works round the clock to support her child, with no time to prioritise herself, but still looks pretty, I see Kareena. Thankfully, when she agreed to take on the role, half my work was done. From that point on, it was up to her to drive the film forward.”

Jaane Jaan is a mystery thriller, based on novelist Keigo Higashino's The Devotion of Suspect X.

Incidentally, Kareena's latest film, The Buckingham Murders, with Hansal Mehta, is also a mystery thriller.
