Dhadak 2, starring Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri, was announced by the makers on Monday. Backed by Dharma Productions, the film will be the debut directorial of Shazia Iqbal. It will be a spiritual sequel of Dhadak (2018) which featured Ishaan Khatter and Janhvi Kapoor, and is based on the critically acclaimed Tamil film Periyerum Perumal (2018) helmed by Mari Selvaraj. The film was the Hindi remake of 2016 Marathi film Sairat, directed by Nagraj Manjule.
In an announcement video shared by the makers, a wall is shown with lines written such as, “Ek tha raja (There was a king)”; “Ek thi rani (There was a queen)”; “Jaat alag thi (They were from different caste)”; “Khatm kahaani (Story over).” Then we see Triptii and Siddhant’s characters holding each other. “Dalit lives matter” can also be spotted on the wall shown in the video. It is clear that the film will be a love story of a couple who hail from different castes.
Dhadak, when it was released, was criticised for sidelining the caste angle of Sairat. In the film, the characters of Ishaan and Janhvi came from different economic classes but the caste dynamics of Nagraj Manjule directorial didn’t translate in the Hindi version.
Dhadak 2 will release in theatres on November 22.
Siddhant is gearing up for other projects, such as the actioner Yudhra. Triptii, on the other hand, has a slew of projects in the pipeline including, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, Bad Newz and Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video.
