Sanjay Leela Bhansali on his connection with music: ‘My soul started responding to it’

Sanjay Leela Bhansali opened up recently on his connection with music that makes him compose his own songs for his films. Right from his first directorial Khamoshi: The Musical (1996) to his latest OTT debut, Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, his music becomes a major part of the storytelling.

Bhansali's interest in music was generated right from his childhood days. He would go to Alankar Talkies as a boy to watch films and get immersed in the musical quality. He would forget the actors and listen intently to singer Bade Ghulam Ali Khan in the songs.

Speaking about it, he said, “Somewhere, my soul started responding to it. I felt that I understood this.”

Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar released on Netflix on May 1 and stars Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Richa Chadha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Taha Shah, Fardeen Khan, Shekhar Suman, Sanjeeda Shaikh, and Sharmin Segal.
