Yash Raj Films (YRF) took to Instagram on Friday evening to issue a statement on the release of Maharaj after the Gujarat High Court cleared the film, saying that it doesn’t disrespect any community. The film is based on the 1862 libel case between Karsandas Mulji and a Vaishnavite religious leader who was accused of sexual misconduct.

Saying that they are grateful for the court’s decision, the production house said, “We are grateful to the judiciary for allowing the release of Maharaj, a film that celebrates one of the most important social reformers of our country, Karsandas Mulji. Karsandas, a hero and a devout Vaishnav, stood for righteousness, protected women and safeguarded his community and faith. Maharaj is a tribute to his indomitable fighting spirit and his courage to be on the right side of history."

They added, “Yash Raj Films has a 50-year-old legacy of championing India, its stories, its people, culture & heritage. We have never produced a film that has tarnished the reputation of our country or our countrymen. Hope you watch Maharaj and join us in saluting Karsandas. Thank You.”

Maharaj stars Junaid Khan, Jaideep Ahlawat, Shivani Pandey and Sharvari (special appearance) in pivotal roles. It was earlier scheduled to be released on June 14, but was delayed after a petition was filed in the court by members of the Pushtimarg sect alleging that the film hurts their sentiments. The court cleared the film on Friday, making it available for streaming on Netflix.
