The horror-comedy film Munjya has earned Rs. 4.21 crore at the box-office on day 1 of its release, the makers announced in a social media post. Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar, the film stars Sharvari, Mona Singh, Abhay Verma, and Sathyaraj in pivotal roles.
Sharing the poster of the film along with the earnings, the makers wrote in the caption, “The audience made #Munjya’s debut spectacular! Thank you for all the love. #Munjya, a must-watch entertainer for families and kids, is in cinemas now! So, book your tickets and watch it at your nearest theatre!”
Speaking to PTI earlier, Aditya had revealed that it took an year to create the main character using CGI. He said, "The 50 per cent cost of the film was spent on the VFX. And that's a big number. That's the conviction (of the makers) or the importance of the VFX (in the film). We created a creature from CGI and VFX space which came from a lot of research and development and back and forth in trying to get it right.”
Munjya is written by Yogesh Chandekar with additional screenplay and dialogue by Niren Bhatt. The film is from the house of Maddock Films and is backed by Dinesh Vijan and Amar Kaushik, the makers of Stree (2018).
CE's review of the film read, "A lot of Munjya is set in a village on the Konkan coast. It provides a fresh scenery and reminded me of the scenic setting of Tumbbad. Sadly, the similarities end here. Munjya’s interesting premise has a lofty execution, inundated with jump-scares that mostly fly by. There are too many repetitive, unimaginative scenes which involve characters either freaking out or screaming out of a room. The screenplay, at times, felt too random, too convenient."
