The Rajkummar Rao and Janhvi Kapoor starrer Mr. & Mrs. Mahi is inching towards the Rs 20 crore mark at the box office.
As per the website Sacnilk, the Sharan Sharma directorial opened with Rs 6.75 crore. The collections then dipped to Rs 4.6 crore on Saturday, rising marginally to Rs 5.5 crore on Sunday before experiencing a sharp plunge again on Monday with Rs 2.15 crore. The total collection for the sports-drama film now stands at Rs 19 crore.
Mr. & Mrs. Mahi tells the story of Mahendra and Mahima, played by Rajkummar and Janhvi, meeting each other for marriage prospects. Love blooms between them and they tie the knot. Both then discover a shared love for cricket. Rajkummar failed at being a cricketer and has a disapproving father (played by Kumud Mishra). When he sees Janhvi hitting a straight drive, he is convinced she should venture into sports, although she is not exactly interested. What begins is a complex tale, where Rajkummar’s character tries to vicariously live his dream through Jahnvi.
Written by Nikhil Mehrotra & Sharan Sharma, the film is produced by Karan Johar, Zee Studios, Hiroo Yash Johar and Apoorva Mehta. It released in theatres on May 31.
An excerpt from our review of the film read: “Mr. & Mrs. Mahi is Bawaal (2023) if it were a sports drama. It is an Ayushmann Khurrana film with a bruised male ego but no venereal diseases. It also has elements of a diabolical version of Chak De! India (2007), where coach Kabir Khan (Shah Rukh Khan) is empowering the women’s team only for personal fame and glory. What if all he was seeking was a garlanded welcome into the muhalla he was kicked out of for being a “traitor”.? What if the famous sattar (70) minute speech was actually to garner likes on the gram?”
