Subhash Ghai, the celebrated director known for iconic Hindi films such as Taal, Ram Lakhan, and Saudagar, was admitted to Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai after experiencing health issues. According to reports, the 79-year-old was rushed to the hospital on Wednesday due to weakness, respiratory problems, and dizziness.
Ghai is currently under close observation, monitored by a team of specialist doctors, including cardiologist Dr Nitin Gokhale, neurologist Dr Vijay Chaudhary, and pulmonologist Dr Jalil Parkar. Sources have confirmed that the filmmaker is responding well to treatment. “He is showing signs of improvement and will soon be moved from the ICU to the general ward,” the report added.
However, a statement from the filmmaker’s spokesperson clarified that Ghai is “absolutely fine” and that his hospitalisation was for a routine check-up.
Just last month, Ghai launched his memoir, Karma's Child, co-written with Suveen Sinha. The book, published by HarperCollins, was unveiled at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Mumbai. Reflecting on the book and his career during the launch, Ghai shared his experiences of navigating the highs and lows of filmmaking.
“Whenever you tell a story in films, sometimes there are good and bad things. You have spoken against some people and you have to agree with some people. So, the era is high and low, the dilemma of the director. I have expressed my experience from my perspective,” he said to PTI.
Ghai also spoke about the evolving admiration for his films over the years. “When I was making those films, I was thinking it was nice, but when an upcoming generation compliments your films, you know it's not the market. Back then it was a market, and now it is real admiration. I feel the genuine admiration has started now,” he added.
Known as the ‘Showman of Bollywood,’ Subhash Ghai has delivered numerous cinematic classics, including Kalicharan, Karz, Hero, Vidhaata, Meri Jung, Karma, Ram Lakhan, Taal, and Saudagar. His last directorial venture was Kaanchi, which was released in 2014.
Fans and colleagues in the industry are wishing Ghai a speedy recovery, eagerly anticipating his return to full health.
