Varun Dhawan has joined Sunny Deol’s war film Border 2, the makers announced on Friday with a short teaser video. Helmed by Kesari (2019) director Anurag Singh, Border 2 is a sequel to Border, which released in 1997.

In the video, Sonu Nigam’s voice is heard as he sings the song ‘Sandese Aate Hai’ from the 1997 film, and Varun says a patriotic dialogue with the music. In the caption, it was written, “Welcoming Fauji Varun Dhawan to the Battalion of Border2.”

Varun shared the video on his feed and wrote a long note about being part of the film. He said, "I was just a kid in class four when I went to Chandan Cinema and saw Border. And it made such a big impact. I still remember the sense of national pride we all felt in the hall. I began looking up to our armed forces and to this day, I salute how they protect us and keep us safe be it on our borders or during natural calamities."

He added, "JP Dutta sir’s war epic remains one of my most favourite movies to this day. To play a part in Border 2 produced by J P sir and Bhushan Kumar is a very, very special moment in my career. And I get to work with Sunny Paaji my hero makes it all the more special. I look forward to bring a valiant jawaan’s story to screen in what promises to be India’s biggest war film."

It was earlier reported that Ayushmann Khurrana would also be part of the film. Details regarding the remaining cast are still under wraps. The film will commence shooting by October, as per an earlier press note.

Border, set during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, was based on the famous Battle of Longewala. It featured an ensemble of actors like Suniel Shetty, Jackie Shroff, and Akshaye Khanna, among others. It was the highest grossing film of 1997. The sequel will also look into the 1971 war.

Border 2 will be produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, the original film’s director JP Dutta and his daughter Nidhi Dutta. It is scheduled to release on January 26, 2026.
