National Film Awards 2023: Rocketry: The Nambi Effect wins Best film, Alia Bhatt and Kriti Sanon share Best Actress Award

The winners for the 69th National Film Awards for films released in the year 2021 were announced today. The Best feature film award was bagged by Rocketry: The Nambi Effect directed by R Madhavan. The Best Hindi film award was given to Sardar Udham directed by Shoojit Sircar. Allu Arjun won the Best Actor award for Pushpa: The Rise while the best actress award was shared by Alia Bhatt and Kriti Sanon for Gangubai Kathiawadi and Mimi respectively. Gangubai Kathiawadi also won the best adapted screenplay award. The Best Supporting Actor award was won by Pankaj Tripathi for Mimi and the Best Supporting Actress title was bagged by Pallavi Joshi for The Kashmir Files. The Best Director award was given to Nikhil Mahajan for the Marathi film Godavari. The Kashmir Files also won the Nargis Dutt Award for Best Film on National Integration.

According to the Directorate of Film Festivals of the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the National Film Awards “aim at encouraging the production of films of aesthetic and technical excellence and social relevance.”

At the 68th National Film Awards last year Ajay Devgn won the Best Actor award for Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior at the 68th National Film Festival announced on Friday. He shared the award with Suriya who got it for Soorarai Pottru. The Best Hindi Film award was bagged by Toolsidas Junior, directed by Mridul Mahendra Toolsidas, and starring Rajiv Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt. Child actor Varun Bhuddhadev also received a special mention from the jury for the film. Vishal Bhardwaj also bagged an award for Best Music Direction for the song Marenge Toh Wahin Jaakar’ in the documentary 1232 kms, on migrant workers crisis during the pandemic. 

The awards were first handed out in 1954 and were known as the ‘State Awards’. At the time, only best films in different regional languages were recognised and awarded. The awards for actors and technicians working on the films were first given in 1967. Nargis was the first actor to win Best Actress for her performance in Raat Aur Din. Uttam Kumar won the Best Actor award for Antony Firingee and Chiriyakhana in the same year.
