Asha Parekh on Pathaan controversy: Totally opposed to such bullying

Veteran actor Asha Parekh has weighed in on the controversy surrounding Shah Rukh Khan-Deepika Padukone starrer Pathaan, saying the film's 'smooth release' is necessary for the industry's recovery.

Asha Parekh, who was the first female chairperson of the CBFC from 1998 to 2001, told Bollywood Hungama that she is personally opposed to 'such bullying' as has been demonstrated against the film.

Pathaan landed in trouble after the song Besharam Rang allegedly hurt religious sentiments of some. The CBFC has reportedly cleared the film with a U/A certificate after over 10 cuts.

Stressing on the importance of the film's release, especially after a low phase for the movie business, Asha Parekh told the portal, "Let them remove the song Besharam Rang, if that’s what it takes to ensure a smooth release for Pathaan.”

She, however, denounced the outcry and intimidation plaguing the film. "Although let me state very clearly that I’m totally opposed to such bullying. Why should some elements decide on behalf of the entire nation on what’s good and what’s not? You don’t want to see the film, don’t see it. I want to see the film. Why are you stopping me?” Parekh was quoted as saying.

Asha Parekh is known for iconic films like Dil Deke Dekho, Teesri Manzil, Kati Patang, Caravan and others. She was conferred the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India's highest cinema honour, in 2020.
