Sunny Deol: Cinema doesn’t need critics

Actor Sunny Deol trained his guns at film critics in a recent interview. The Gadar 2 actor recently said that “cinema doesn’t need critics” as they are the “destructors of the industry.”

In a conversation with The Hindustan Times, during a discussion about Sunny’s low phase, the actor said that sometimes it doesn’t matter whether the film is good or bad. “Sometimes it works even if it is bad, other times it doesn’t even when it is good. Unless and until cinemas give breathing space to films for them to sustain, they can’t do anything. Today people just check show timings on their phone and don’t watch a film because they don’t get a show time of their preference.”

When asked if reviews too affect people’s film-watching habits, Sunny said, “Critics are basically destructors of the industry, they aren’t bothered about it.”

“They have the power to do everything. Cinema doesn’t need critics,” he added. The actor also went on to state that he isn’t “making art films with a thesis.” “We are bringing stories like the ones our mom would narrate to us as children. I laugh when I see people (criticising films) I say, let them do it, I don’t care. I exist if people want me. But nobody can put me down or make me. It’s work which makes or breaks you.”

The actor’s latest blockbuster Gadar 2 made over Rs 500 crore at the box office but wasn’t received well by the critics.
