Veteran filmmaker Saawan Kumar Tak passed away at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Hospital in Mumbai on Thursday after a prolonged illness. He had been suffering from lung-related ailments for a long time.

Saawan’s nephew Navin Kumar told ABP News that the 86-year-old filmmaker died due to a heart attack and multiple organ failure. 

"He was admitted to the hospital a few days ago. He's had a history of lung-related ailments, we had admitted him thinking he was suffering from pneumonia, but his lungs were not working,” said Navin. 

The veteran filmmaker is said to have launched actors like the late Sanjeev Kumar and comedy king Mehmood in Bollywood.  

The filmmaker debuted as a producer in 1967 with the film Naunihal. The film starring Sanjeev Kumar in the lead role, made its way to the National Awards that year as it received the Presidential mention. He later made his directorial debut in 1972 with Gomti Ke Kinare, starring Meena Kumari. It also went on to become the last film of her acting career. 

Saawan also directed Salman Khan’s hit 90s film Sanam Bewafa. Salman also took to Twitter to remember the late filmmaker.

He also had an illustrious career as a lyricist with several popular songs to his credit. He wrote the lyrics of Hrithik Roshan and Ameesha Patel's debut film Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai. Along with this, he has also penned the lyrics for films like Souten, Souten ki Beti and Bewaffa se Waffa.
