Abhiroop Basu's new short film Gudiya will be screened at the 36th Braunschweig International Film Festival. The festival, the oldest in Lower Saxony, will be held from November 7-13, 2022 in Braunschweig, Germany.
Gudiya (Plaything) follows a day in the life of a sex worker in West Bengal, in an allegory about the power relations that bind us all. The film is being shown in a special programme for women-centric stories at Braunschweig film fest on November 9.
The 9-minute short was filmed on an iPhone 13 with a crew of four. It stars Satakshi Nandy along with Apeksha Singh."Surreal to see a film shot on an iPhone with just a crew of four and a whole lot of jugaad, now part of such a diverse and handcrafted line-up of films, specially in a section that is dedicated towards powerful stories about women from across cultures," says Abhiroop. "Also, a personal reminder how the power of story-telling triumphs over the mindless chatter about technology and equipments."
Earlier, Gudiya had its world premiere at the 46th Odense International Short Film Festival in Denmark. Abhiroop has directed short films like Laali and Meal in the past.
