Hollywood's September box office has turned into an unusual clash between nostalgia and new releases. While studios rolled out fresh films led by stars such as Brad Pitt and Robert Pattinson, one of the biggest theatrical spectacles of the last decade returned to cinemas with material that audiences had already seen before. The weekend ultimately offered a reminder that, for Marvel, an old theatrical event can still become a new one.

The timing of the re-release is particularly significant. Avengers: Endgame has returned to the big screen ahead of Avengers: Doomsday, with the Encore edition carrying four minutes of additional footage, a new post-credits scene and an exclusive glimpse of the upcoming Avengers film. Disney and Marvel's strategy was to use the re-release to build anticipation for Doomsday, while also introducing audiences to its Infinity Vision premium-format certification.

That strategy has translated into a strong opening weekend. Avengers Endgame: Encore collected an estimated USD 26 million in North America and USD 60 million overseas, taking its worldwide weekend haul to USD 86 million, according to studio estimates reported by Variety and TheWrap. Its lifetime worldwide total has consequently climbed to about USD 2.88 billion, leaving it roughly USD 39-40 million behind Avatar's USD 2.9 billion global haul.

In India, the re-release also maintained its momentum through the opening weekend. According to Sacnilk figures, Endgame: Encore collected Rs 7.55 crore on Sunday, taking its three-day India total to Rs 22.45 crore. The report noted that the film continued to hold its ground despite several new releases arriving alongside it.

The India run had already shown the strength of the Marvel fanbase before the weekend was complete. The film opened with Rs 7.25 crore on Friday and added Rs 7.65 crore on Saturday, according to Sacnilk data. The English version remained the biggest contributor, while the Hindi, Tamil and Telugu versions also added to the overall haul.

The more striking comparison came from the international box office. Brad Pitt's Heart of the Beast, David Ayer's survival thriller, opened to USD 20 million in North America and USD 30.1 million from 63 international markets, taking its worldwide opening to USD 50.1 million. Robert Pattinson's Primetime, meanwhile, opened to USD 19.2 million domestically. The A24 film had the smallest production budget among the major new releases at around USD 15 million.

The contrast becomes even more interesting when the films' budgets and release strategies are considered. Heart of the Beast arrived with a substantially larger production cost, while Primetime played in around 500 fewer theatres than Pitt's film. Yet both found themselves competing for attention with a film audiences had already watched seven years ago.

For Marvel, the Encore performance also serves another purpose beyond its immediate box-office haul. The original Endgame finished its 2019 run with about USD 2.79 billion worldwide, and the re-release has now pushed that figure to around USD 2.88 billion. The film has also become only the second movie ever to cross USD 2 billion in international box-office collections.
