Director Alejandro G Inarritu describes his upcoming film, Digger, as a disaster film, with an intriguing take on what the disaster is. Starring Tom Cruise as the titular character, the upcoming film is set to release on October 2.
Ahead of the release of the final trailer of Digger, a new poster for the film offers a fresh look at the film. Speaking about the film, through a statement to the press, the director said, "The disaster isn’t a comet or an earthquake, or an alien invasion. The disaster is us. Most disaster movies ask, ‘What if something terrible happened to humanity?’ Our question was much simpler: ‘What if humanity happened to humanity?’” He added, “I knew exactly this guy. Reality gives us the events, but imagination lets us recognise ourselves in them. Literally, this film is about us. The film revolves around these three ancient forces, which are greed, power, and responsibility.”
Tom Cruise described the film as, “a real leap into the unknown.” He added, “It took all of my knowledge, from all of the years of every film I made, to be able to play this character and fulfil the ambition of this movie. Iñárritu showed me, ‘Here’s kind of the character that I want,’” he recalls, before adding, “Let’s f***ing go. I couldn’t wait.”
The story of Digger is as follows, "The film follows Digger Rockwell (Tom Cruise), an oil baron whose immense power and ambition put him at the centre of an ecological crisis that threatens to escalate into a global catastrophe. With the world closing in and his empire at stake, Cruise’s character becomes convinced that he is the only man capable of saving humanity. What follows is a darkly comic, increasingly chaotic race against time, as a man accustomed to having the answers finds himself confronting consequences he may no longer be able to control."
The cast of the film includes Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Oscar nominee Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Robert John Burke, Emma D’Arcy, Burn Gorman and Sophie Wilde.
Inarritu has written the film's screenplay along with Alexander Dinelaris and Nicolás Giacobone, and Sabina Berman, from a story by Iñárritu and Berman.
