Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is set to lead The Black Tapes, an eight-episode supernatural investigation drama, which has been greenlit by MGM+. The upcoming series is based on the 2015 horror podcast of the same name. The podcast creators, Terry Miles and Paul Bae, are teaming up on the TV adaptation with John Rogers (Leverage).
Produced by MGM+ Studios, Rogers also serves as the series' showrunner. The Black Tapes revolve around Dr Richard Strand (Coster-Waldau), a brilliant psychiatrist with an enigmatic past, who joins forces with a relentless scientist, Alex Regan. The duo team up to debunk paranormal cases of hauntings and possessions. But as they unravel the secrets, they discover a hidden occult world that has the key to a centuries-old apocalyptic conspiracy. The series is set to begin production in January 2027 in Vancouver.
The Black Tapes joins MGM+'s horror slate, following From, set for its fifth and final season, and the second season of The Institute, which premieres on November 8.
Popular for his role as Jaime Lannister in HBO's Game of Thrones, Coster-Waldau's recent credits include King & Conqueror and The Last Thing He Told Me. He will next be seen in the Netflix film The Last Mrs Parrish, starring opposite Jennifer Lopez.
