Tom Cruise's recently released film Digger has been met with mixed to negative reviews from critics and audiences and has not had a particular good start at the box office. According to the latest available data from the box office tracker Sacnilk, director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's film has only grossed around two crore from theatres worldwide. It is regarded as the lowest opening for a Tom Cruise film after 2007's Lions For Lambs.

In a recent On Film With Kevin McCarthy episode, Cruise and Inarritu appeared together before the release of the film. During the conversation, Cruise spoke about his approach to cinema. "I never thought of movies, as when I am making them, going, 'Opening Weekend'. I don't feel that way about it. I feel very much like we're going to do everything to make it as something that is a lasting piece of cinema."

Cruise also compared audiences' film viewing habits in theatres in the past with today's trends. Noting that he wants to make films for posterity, the superstar added, "I was fortunate to have released films in the 80s and the 90s where movies would stay in the theatres for a year or sometimes for years." Then, he noted how films could be pulled out of theatres after the initial release and be released again at a more opportune time later, citing 1967's Bonnie and Clyde and 1979's The Great Santini as titles that reaped the rewards of this approach.

Coming back to Digger, the film has marked the first collaboration between actor Cruise and director Inarritu. Recently, amidst the criticism and the low box office performance for the film, the actor expressed his pride for it. "The experience was truly unforgettable and I’m so proud of what we created," he said after thanking his Digger team.
