Actor Adam Driver has confirmed that he will be playing the antagonist in Heat 2, filmmaker Michael Mann's upcoming follow-up to his 1995 crime thriller Heat. The actor also offered an update on Mann's health after the 83-year-old filmmaker accidentally shot himself in the leg at a Los Angeles gun range last week, revealing that he had returned to work soon after the incident.
Speaking on The Rich Eisen Show, Driver confirmed that he would be portraying Otis Wardell, a criminal antagonist in the story. The actor, who previously collaborated with Mann on Ferrari (2023), also expressed his excitement about reuniting with the filmmaker. Describing the screenplay, Driver said it was more condensed and streamlined than the novel on which the film is based. He called it “a missile” while praising the cast assembled for the project.
Driver also spoke about Mann's recovery following the shooting incident. “He's good. I texted him immediately; he responded, and he was at work the next day,” the actor said. He added that the accident was surprising, considering Mann's familiarity with firearms and his previous experience in competitive shooting. According to Driver, the filmmaker had performed the same holstering motion thousands of times.
Mann's representative had earlier confirmed that the director suffered a superficial injury after a firearm accidentally discharged while holstered at a shooting range. He was taken for treatment and was subsequently released. The Los Angeles Police Department also determined that the incident was accidental.
The update comes as Mann prepares to take Heat 2 into production. Based on the novel of the same name, which Mann co-wrote with Meg Gardiner and published in 2022, the film will function as both a prequel and a sequel to the 1995 film. The story follows several characters across different timelines, exploring events leading up to the original film as well as what happens afterwards.
The original Heat starred Al Pacino as Lieutenant Vincent Hanna and Robert De Niro as criminal Neil McCauley, with Val Kilmer playing Chris Shiherlis. The film is widely regarded as one of the defining crime dramas of its era.
The upcoming film has reportedly lined up an ensemble that includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale and Stephen Graham, among others. Driver's Otis Wardell is a new antagonist introduced in the novel. Production is expected to begin in early 2027.
