Earlier, we reported about director Maggie Gyllenhaal making a comeback to feature film making after 2021's The Lost Daughter with The Bride! Based on Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, the film stars Jessie Buckley in the titular role alongside Christian Bale, who stars as Frankenstein's monster. With only days to go for its release, Gyllenhaal spoke about the sheer diversity of actors in her film.
Speaking to Variety, the filmmaker said that The Bride! marks her first collaboration with actors Penélope Cruz and Annette Bening. The cast also includes Gyllenhaal's husband Peter Sarsgaard and her brother Jake. Referring to Jake Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard, she said that her close association with the actors means a great understanding with them. "I know them very well and can see right into their hearts," she said.
The plot follows Frankenstein, also known as Frankenstein's Monster, who asks a scientist (Bening's Dr Euphronious) to create a companion for him. Subsequently, she resurrects a murdered youngster (Buckley). What follows goes the imaginations of both Dr Euphronious and Frankenstein.
The Bride! brings Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal back together for the first time after 2001's cult classic science-fiction film Donnie Darko. Interestingly, in the cult classic film, they portrayed siblings. In a recent conversation with Deadline, the filmmaker revealed that she became emotional while discussing the film with her brother for the first time and that she "waited too long" to collaborate with him again. "That was a rookie mistake," she said, referring to the 25-year-long gap between her films alongside Jake Gyllenhaal.
On the other hand, the upcoming film reunites Maggie Gyllenhaal with her spouse Sarsgaard after their collaboration on The Lost Daughter.
