Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz have been confirmed to come back to the The Mummy franchise's fourth instalment. Recently, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the directors of The Mummy 4, talked about why Fraser and Weisz are coming back for the sequel.
In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, the director duo credited producer and their longtime collaborator William Sherrick with landing the fourth film. Sherrick told the directors that he would try and help bring them onboard for the next film in the franchise during the production of their vampire film Abigail. They initially did not believe that it would be possible, but before Abigail's production, they found themselves discussing a story to pitch for The Mummy film with writer Dave Coggeshall. The pitch finally worked and the project has been greenlit.
According to Bettinelli-Olpin, the screenplay that Coggeshall has written for the film has "all of the heart and the character that you could hope for". On the other hand, Gillett said that Rachel and Fraser have joined the film only because they liked the screenplay to a great extent. Calling it an excellent screenplay, the filmmaker shared his excitement about making the film.
It brings Fraser and Weisz back together after 1999's The Mummy and its 2001 sequel. Notably, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor featured Maria Bello as Evelyn in place of Weisz.
According to the filmmakers, the upcoming sequel would be "beautiful, scary, sweeping, and awesome". Meanwhile, they are awaiting the release of Ready or Not 2: Here I Come.
On the other hand, The Mummy 4 has been slated for a May 19, 2028, release in theatres.
