Kathryn Newton is keeping Marvel fans guessing about Avengers: Doomsday, but one thing she isn't hiding is her excitement about working with directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo. The film is gearing up to open in theatres on December 18.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor, who plays Cassie Lang in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), described filming Avengers: Doomsday as an even better experience than she had imagined.
When asked whether the highly anticipated Marvel film lived up to her expectations, Newton said, "It was better." While she admitted she could not reveal much about the project, she was full of praise for the Russo brothers, who return to the MCU after directing Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
"I don't know how much I'm allowed to say, but the Russo brothers love these movies. I felt it, and I felt empowered," Newton said, stopping herself before inadvertently revealing more. "I think they made... I don't want to say anything."
Newton also reflected on the atmosphere on the set, saying the filmmakers brought a unique energy to the production. She added that she "felt a different kind of energy" while working with them and said she could not wait for audiences to watch Avengers: Doomsday.
During the conversation, Newton was also asked about a photo of her alongside Xochitl Gomez in their Marvel costumes that had circulated online. Laughing off the assumption that it was related to Avengers: Doomsday, she clarified that the image was actually taken for a Disney Cruise Line promotional experience featuring Marvel characters, which also included Dominique Thorne.
Newton made her MCU debut as an older Cassie Lang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The daughter of Scott Lang, Cassie eventually dons a suit of her own and becomes the young superhero known as Stature in Marvel Comics, making her a key member of the Young Avengers. Although Marvel Studios has yet to officially confirm the extent of Cassie's role in Avengers: Doomsday, Newton is among the growing list of MCU actors expected to return for the ensemble blockbuster.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to bring together heroes from across the MCU, alongside characters from Fox's X-Men films and Marvel's Fantastic Four franchise, in what is expected to be one of the biggest crossover events since Avengers: Endgame. The film is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo and will feature Robert Downey Jr. as the iconic villain Doctor Doom, marking the Oscar winner's return to Marvel in an entirely new role.
