Recently, we reported about the development of a series based on Stephen King's first novel Carrie. On Thursday, Prime Video released a set of images offering a first look at the series adaptation, with Mike Flanagan serving as its writer, executive producer, and showrunner. The first-ever television adaptation of the novel is billed as "a bold, timely, and surprising reinvention of the classic coming‑of‑age story."
It stars Summer Howell as Carrie White, who has lived most of her life at her residence with her mother Margaret (Samantha Sloyan), who is fiercely protective. An excerpt from the official longline reads, "After her father’s sudden, untimely death thrusts her into the unforgiving ecosystem of public high school, Carrie is forced to navigate a viral bullying scandal that tears through her community, the relentless pressure and casual cruelty of the social‑media age, and the awakening of mysterious telekinetic powers that rise alongside her adolescence."
The Carrie series adaptation also stars Siena Agudong (Resident Evil) as Sue Snell, Alison Thornton (Fire Country) as Chris Hargensen, Joel Oulette (My Life with the Walter Boys) as Tommy Ross, Josie Tota (The Buccaneers) as Tina, Arthur Conti (Beetlejuice Beetlejuice) as Billy, Thalia Dudek (The Running Man) as Emaline, Amber Midthunder (Prey) as Miss Desjardin, and Matthew Lillard (Man of Tomorrow) as Principal Grayle.
The series marks yet another addition to Mike Flanagan's horror oeuvre. He is known for series such as Midnight Mass, The Haunting of Hill House, and The Haunting of Bly Manor, as well as films such as Oculus, Hush, and Gerald's Game. Flanagan is also the director of the upcoming Exorcist film, starring Scarlett Johansson.
Published in 1974, Carrie already has a film adaptation, the Academy Award nominated 1976 title, directed by Brian De Palma and starring Sissy Spacek in the titular role. The series, meanwhile, is set to release in October, according to reports.
