The tiny yellow creatures with denim overalls return yet again, with a completely different assignment at hand: making a monster movie. Spawning from the Despicable Me franchise, the minions that always served as foot soldiers in accomplishing some other master's dreams, now fancy a dream of their own. Minions and Monsters' director Pierre Coffin found this idea, coming from Illumination founder Chris Meledandri, fascinating. "I loved it right away because it felt very funny and very true to them. The Minions are always trying to serve someone else’s dream, but this gave us a way to let them discover one of their own," shares Coffin.

The story idea had instantly galloped through Coffin's mind with several possibilities, as he says that figuring out the perfect setting of the film was easy. "We immediately thought that setting it in the 1920s made sense because cinema was still being invented around that time. It was a world of instinct and physical comedy, which felt like the perfect place for the Minions to end up.” Writer Brian Lynch, who has the story credits on Minions: The Rise of Gru, expresses satisfaction in putting maximum effort to evoke laughter. “I’ve worked with Pierre a lot, but this was the first time co-writing something with him,” he says, adding that he was fortunate to co-write with the Minions, who were voiced by Coffin himself. " I loved it. We would bounce ideas off each other, and then send script pages back and forth, trying to make the other laugh. Plus, I got to write a Minions movie with the Minions as my co-writer. Who else can say that?”

The upcoming film, which is releasing in theatres on Thursday, stars Coffin, Trey Parker, Jesse Eisenberg, Allison Janney, Christoph Waltz, Phil LaMarr, Zoey Deutch, and Jeff Bridges.
