Primate's director Johannes Roberts speaks about the nuanced preparation for the film
The upcoming horror film, Primate, has an unlikely character at its nucleus, a chimpanzee. But on sets, it wasn't a real animal in front of the lens, it was stunt performer Miguel Torres Umba essaying the character.
Speaking about the character, director Johannes Roberts said, "Ben (the chimpanzee) has been the heart and soul of this family. The audience has to feel like they can reach out and touch Ben. When he slowly starts to unravel, he doesn’t understand what’s happening. The family doesn’t realize until it’s too late to do anything."
Torres Umba's preparation for the role was with deep emotional nuance, reveals the director. "Miguel approached the role with an early understanding of Ben’s movements, and through working with a movement coach and the stunt team, he has shaped a character that stands on its own. Miguel intuitively understands who Ben is, articulates the character’s intentions and reactions, and has brought remarkable dedication to the role," said Roberts.
Roberts has previously directed Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. Meanwhile, Primate is set to release on January 23.
